The Academic Requirement Check This First
Before spending time gathering documents, check one thing. Your academic average.
Students with an average below 65 percent in their final year of study or most recent examination will not be considered. This is a firm threshold not a soft guideline.

Eligible Fields of Study

Earth Observation and Environmental Sciences
Remote sensing, GIS, botany, ecology, environmental science, environmental geology, environmental management, geoinformatics, geographical science, plant and environmental science, statistical ecology and geography and environmental management.
Science and Engineering
Computer and electronic engineering, computer science, electrical engineering, electronic engineering, information technology, mechanical engineering and mechatronics engineering.
Mathematics, Physics and Space Science
Applied mathematics, physics, space science, energy studies and information systems.

What the Application Requires
This is where applications most commonly fail. Not because of weak academic records but because of missing, incorrectly certified or inaccessible documents.
Every applicant must submit:
- Full official university academic record from first year including final year or mid year 2026 results
- Official undergraduate student account statement or official letter confirming NSFAS funding for undergraduate fees
- Certified copy of ID certified within the last three months
- Testimonial from a lecturer or proposed supervisor for Master’s and Doctoral applicants
- Draft research proposal signed and dated by both the applicant and proposed supervisor
- Master’s applicants: maximum 2 pages
- Doctoral applicants: maximum 4 pages
Two document rules that catch applicants off guard:
- The ID certification must be dated within three months of submission. An older certified copy will not be accepted.
- Encrypted or password protected files may result in the application being classified as incomplete regardless of content quality.
Check every file before uploading. An otherwise strong application can be disqualified on a technicality that takes five minutes to fix.
Master’s and Doctoral Applicants The Proposal Matters
For Honours applicants, the academic record and ID documentation are the primary requirements.
For Master’s and Doctoral candidates, the research proposal carries real weight. This is not a formality.
SANSA is funding research that connects to its scientific priorities. A proposal that clearly explains the research problem its relevance to South Africa’s STEM landscape and a credible methodology will be more competitive than a generic outline of vague research intentions.
