Spending weeks preparing a scholarship application only to discover you were ineligible from the start is one of the most avoidable mistakes in the process.
For the Global Korea Scholarship 2027 eligibility comes down to six things. Nationality, age, education level, graduation date, grades and health. None of them are complicated. All of them are worth checking before you do anything else.
This guide covers the official eligibility criteria from the 2027 GKS Undergraduate Application Guidelines including who cannot apply even if they meet the basic requirements.

1. Nationality
You must be a citizen of a country designated by NIIED for the GKS program.
Beyond that three additional rules apply:
- Neither you nor your parents or legal guardians can hold Korean citizenship
- Dual citizenship that includes Korean citizenship makes you ineligible
- Former Korean citizens must provide official proof that their Korean citizenship was renounced
The UIC Program operates under slightly different terms. It is open to applicants from all countries except Korea.
If there is any uncertainty about your citizenship status resolve it before investing time in the application. This is the one requirement where a grey area can disqualify an otherwise strong candidate.
2. Age Limit
The cutoff is straightforward.
You must be under 25 years old which for the 2027 GKS cycle means you were born after March 1, 2002.
There are no exceptions to the age requirement listed in the official guidelines.
3. Education Level
The requirement here depends on which degree you are applying for.
Applying for a Bachelor’s Degree
You are eligible if you have graduated from high school, are expected to graduate from high school or have completed or are completing an associate degree program.
Applying for an Associate Degree
You are eligible if you have graduated from high school or are expected to graduate.
Two points worth noting clearly:
- If you already hold a bachelor’s degree, you cannot apply for GKS Undergraduate
- If you hold an associate degree, you may only apply for a bachelor’s degree program not another associate degree
4. Graduation Date for Current Students
Students who have not graduated yet can still apply but with one firm condition.
Your graduation must be completed by December 31 2026. When applying, you will need to submit an Expected Graduation Certificate.
If you advance past the first selection round, your final graduation certificate and transcript must be submitted by that same date. Missing the December 31 deadline results in cancellation of your acceptance, regardless of how well you performed in the selection process.
5. GPA Requirements
You need to meet at least one of the following academic thresholds. Not all of them, just one.

If your school uses a grading system not listed here, your institution needs to provide official documentation explaining how the system works. This is something to request early. Schools can take time to produce these documents.
6. Health Requirements
Applicants must be in good physical and mental health, capable of completing the full scholarship program in Korea and eligible for overseas travel.
The official guidelines also state that applicants must have no grounds for disqualification related to criminal history that would prevent overseas travel.
Who Cannot Apply?
Meeting the age and GPA requirements does not automatically clear you. Several specific situations make applicants ineligible regardless of their academic profile.
You cannot apply if:
- You graduated or expect to graduate from a high school located in Korea including international schools within Korea
- You graduated or expect to graduate from a Korean associate degree program
- You completed an online curriculum offered by a school or university located in Korea
- You are currently in your final year at a high school or university in Korea
- You already hold a bachelor’s degree
- You previously received a Korean government scholarship for a degree program subject to specific exceptions in the guidelines
- You received a degree scholarship from another Korean government agency
- You were selected as a GKS degree scholar but withdrew or were disqualified within the past three years
Previous recipients of the GKS Non-Degree Exchange Student Program or the IRTS Korean Language Program are permitted to apply.
Embassy Track vs University Track: Can You Apply to Both?
No. You can only apply through one track.
Within the Embassy Track, you must also choose just one program: General R GKS or Overseas Koreans and Adoptees.
Within the University Track, you apply to one university and one department only choosing either the UIC or Associate Degree program.
There is one exception worth knowing. If you fail the Embassy Track first round not just as a backup candidate but as a full rejection, you may still apply through the University Track if that university’s deadline remains open. However, if you pass the Embassy Track first round even as a backup candidate the University Track is closed to you.
Eligibility Is the Starting Point, Not the Finish Line
Confirming that you meet these six requirements means you can proceed with your application. It does not mean selection is guaranteed.
The official evaluation process first screens for eligibility, then assesses candidates on academic performance, language proficiency, academic activities, contributions to society and international exchange, future potential and the completeness and authenticity of submitted documents.
A candidate who barely meets the GPA threshold but submits a precise, well-documented application will often outperform a stronger academic candidate who submits incomplete or inconsistent materials.
