Most big scholarships come with their own separate application. A different form, A different essay, and sometimes a different deadline entirely from the regular admission process.
The Richmond Scholars Program at the University of Richmond skips all of that. If you apply for undergraduate admission by 1 December 2026. you are automatically considered. No extra form. No extra essay was written specifically for the scholarship.
That simplicity is worth understanding properly because it changes how you should approach your regular application.

What the Scholarship Actually Covers
This is the University of Richmond’s top merit award and it covers three of the biggest costs any international student faces:
- Full undergraduate tuition
- University housing
- Food through an eligible meal plan
Together, these are usually the largest expenses in a U.S. undergraduate education. Removing all three at once is a significant deal not a partial discount.
Beyond the financial side, Richmond Scholars also join a small multidisciplinary community of fellow scholars. That includes faculty mentorship, dedicated leadership programming and access to enrichment grants for faculty-mentored projects and activities.
What It Does Not Cover
This is the part applicants often overlook so it deserves clear attention.
The scholarship does not expressly include:
- Flights to and from the United States
- Student visa costs
- Health insurance
- Books and course materials
- General personal spending
Who Can Apply
This scholarship is specifically for first-year undergraduate applicants. That includes both U.S. and international students.
A few important boundaries:
- You must be completing secondary school or hold an accepted equivalent qualification
- This is not available for transfer students
- This is not designed for master’s or PhD applicants. If you already hold a bachelor’s degree and are looking at postgraduate study, this scholarship does not apply to you
International students are explicitly included here, which is worth highlighting. Not every top-tier U.S. merit scholarship extends full consideration to applicants outside the country but this one does.
What Kind of Student Is Richmond Actually Looking For
There is no published minimum GPA that guarantees a spot. Selection is holistic, which means grades matter but they are only one part of the picture.
Richmond says it is looking for students who show:
- Outstanding academic achievement in secondary school
- Genuine intellectual curiosity
- Real leadership not just a list of titles held
- A clear sense of purpose
- Active involvement in school or community activities
- Evidence that they use their abilities to help or influence others
- A genuine interest in contributing to a diverse campus community
Do You Need SAT or ACT Scores
No. Richmond is test-optional for students entering in 2027. You can submit SAT or ACT scores if you believe they strengthen your application or you can request a review without them.
There is one important distinction here that international applicants sometimes miss. The test-optional admissions policy is separate from the English-language proficiency requirement. If your native language is not English, you may still need to submit an approved IELTS, TOEFL or Duolingo English Test score unless you qualify for one of Richmond’s specific waiver conditions.
Skipping the SAT or ACT does not mean skipping English-proficiency evidence.
What Documents Should You Start Gathering Now
A complete first-year application file typically includes:
- The Common Application or Coalition Application
- Richmond’s specific supplemental response often called the Richmond Question
- Your secondary-school transcript covering grades 9 through 11
- A school report
- At least one recommendation from a school official
- Senior-year progress grades when available
- Details of your activities honors and leadership experience
- English-language proficiency evidence or an approved waiver
- SAT or ACT scores only if you choose to submit them
How to Actually Apply
Since there is no separate scholarship form, the process is really just a complete, well-prepared admission application:
- Choose your intended undergraduate programme at the University of Richmond
- Start your application through either the Common Application or the Coalition Application via Scoir
- Complete the Richmond-specific supplemental questions
- Add your full academic history, achievements and leadership involvement
- Arrange for your transcript, school report and recommendation letters to be submitted
- Submit English-proficiency evidence if required in your case
- Submit your complete application by 1 December 2026
- Use your Spider Portal login issued after submission to check whether any documents are still missing
Some shortlisted applicants may be invited to an interview with a faculty selection committee. Reaching this stage is a good sign but it does not guarantee either admission or the scholarship itself.
Early Action, Early Decision or Regular Decision
You have some flexibility in how you apply but the scholarship deadline stays fixed regardless of which plan you choose.
- Early Action is non-binding and can get you an earlier admission decision, useful if you want clarity sooner without committing exclusively to Richmond
- Early Decision is binding. Choose this only if Richmond is genuinely your first-choice university, since accepting an offer under this plan means withdrawing other applications
- Regular Decision is still an option but here is the catch. You must still submit by 1 December, the scholarship deadline, rather than waiting for Richmond’s later general admission deadline in January
In other words Regular Decision does not mean a later deadline if you want to be considered for Richmond Scholars. 1 December applies no matter which admission plan you choose.
Why This Matters
For a lot of strong international applicants, the biggest barrier to studying at a private U.S. university is not admission. It is cost. A single year of tuition, housing and food at a school like Richmond can run into tens of thousands of dollars, often more than many families can realistically plan for.
By folding scholarship consideration directly into the standard admission process, Richmond removes one layer of complexity that usually discourages strong applicants from even trying. You are not writing a separate scholarship essay under a different set of rules. You are simply putting together the strongest possible version of your regular application.
If you are aiming for Fall 2027 entry, the real work starts now. Gathering transcripts, requesting recommendations early and giving real thought to the Richmond supplemental response. The 1 December 2026 deadline will arrive faster than it seems.
