Activate Fellowship

Most scientists spend years developing technologies that never leave the lab.

Not because the science is not good enough. Because the path from breakthrough to product requires a completely different set of skills like business strategy, investor relations, team building, and market positioning — that a research career rarely develops.

The Activate Fellowship exists for exactly that gap.

The 2027 U.S. Fellowship Cohort is now open. Applications close on 30 October 2026 at 12:00 p.m. Pacific Time. And the financial package on offer is significant enough that it deserves to be stated plainly upfront.

Fellowship Financial Package

Selected fellows receive a total support package that breaks down as follows:

  • $100000 annual living stipend to cover personal expenses without needing outside income
  • $100000 in research and development support dedicated to advancing the technology itself
  • $12000 per year for travel and professional development
  • Health insurance stipend
  • Relocation allowance

For scientists accustomed to grant-writing cycles where funding arrives in fragments with strings attached the structure here is different. The living stipend means fellows can work full-time on their project without a second income. The R&D funding is separate, protecting that personal support from being consumed by lab costs.

That separation is deliberate and worth understanding before you apply.

What Activate Actually Is

Activate supports scientists and engineers in commercializing hardware-based technologies for the first time. Hard tech here means physical or biological sciences and related engineering disciplines — the kind of innovation that requires physical prototypes, lab infrastructure and long development timelines before it is ready for market.

The fellowship provides two things simultaneously: financial runway and entrepreneurial education.

Fellows participate in community programming every two weeks, covering workshops, presentations and peer networking. In the first quarter, a weekly Elements of Entrepreneurship course introduces technical founders to business fundamentals. Throughout the fellowship each fellow receives one-on-one mentorship from their community’s Managing Director and attends quarterly advisory sessions focused on specific company challenges.

Annual retreats and reunions round out the calendar. Activate calls its broader network connections Collisions — facilitated encounters with people outside the immediate cohort who might be relevant to a fellow’s work.

This is not an accelerator with a demo day at the end. The structure is more sustained, more mentorship-heavy and more explicitly designed for people who are exceptional scientists first and founders second.

Eligibility Requirements

The basic requirements are straightforward. Applicants must:

  • Hold a bachelor’s degree
  • Have at least four years of post-baccalaureate experience in scientific research, engineering or technology development
  • Be commercializing a hardware-based technology innovation for the first time
  • Commit full-time to their project if selected
  • Be legally authorized to work in the United States for the duration of the fellowship
  • Demonstrate proficient English communication skills

Activate notes that many successful applicants hold PhDs or have postdoctoral experience. But candidates with equivalent industry-based research and development backgrounds are also considered. The threshold is demonstrated technical depth not a specific credential.

Three eligibility points people frequently overlook:

  • The technology must still be under development. Projects ready for full-scale product sales at the application deadline are not eligible.
  • The project must not have raised more than $2 million in non-governmental funding, debt or equity by the deadline. Activate is for early-stage innovation, not ventures that have already secured significant private capital.
  • Applicants do not need to be an incorporated company or to have left their current job before applying. But if selected full-time commitment is non-negotiable.

The Blinded Resume

Activate’s initial review process is blinded. That means your resume must be submitted without your name, photographs or other personal identifying information.

The fellowship provides a resume template specifically for this purpose. Use it.

Submitting a standard CV with personal details intact or submitting materials that exceed stated page limits can result in rejection without review. Not a lower score — outright rejection before anyone reads the content.

One page. Blinded. Using the provided template. These are not suggestions.

Choosing Your Communities

Activate operates multiple fellowship communities across the United States. Applicants can select and rank up to five communities, explaining each choice within a 250-word limit per community.

The explanation should cover relevant personal or professional ties to that location and how the specific community supports the proposed work. Generic answers — I chose this community because Activate is a great program — do not serve the application.

Research what each community offers in terms of industry proximity lab access and mentor networks before making selections. The ranking matters. Your top community choice signals genuine preference and should be backed by the most specific explanation.

What Strong Applications Look Like

Activate is explicit about what it evaluates. Strong applicants demonstrate:

  • The ability to independently lead the technical work on their innovation
  • Capacity to explain complex science clearly to non-technical audiences
  • Early proof of concept or prototype with experimental evidence
  • Leadership readiness — the ability to navigate uncertainty and mobilize resources
  • Genuine potential impact from the proposed technology

The Two-Step Application Process

This is the detail that catches the most people off guard.

You cannot access the full application directly. First you must complete an application interest form. The link to the full application is sent after that step is complete.

If you start preparing materials without completing the interest form first, you may find yourself without access to the actual application portal when the deadline approaches.

The sequence:

  1. Complete the application interest form on the official Activate website
  2. Receive the full application link
  3. Prepare and submit all required materials before 30 October 2026 at 12:00 p.m. PT

Start early. The deadline is firm and the Pacific Time cutoff means it arrives earlier than expected for applicants in later time zones.
