Commonwealth Scholarship Mentoring Program

Winning a Commonwealth Scholarship is a big moment. But many scholars say the hard part starts after the celebration. How do you settle into a new country? How do you turn your degree into real change back home? And who do you ask when you are not sure?

The Commonwealth Scholarship Mentoring Program 2026-27 is built to answer those questions. It pairs new Commonwealth Scholars with Commonwealth Alumni who have already walked the same road.

What the Programme Is

The Commonwealth Scholarship Commission (CSC) runs this programme for its own community. It connects current scholars with alumni for one-to-one mentoring. The main goal is development impact. In simple words that means using what you learn to improve life in your home country or region.

The programme runs for one year from December 2026 to December 2027. All sessions take place online so mentors and mentees can join from anywhere.

Who Can Take Part

There are two roles.

Mentees

  • All 2026 Commonwealth Scholars studying in the UK
  • Continuing PhD scholars

Mentors

  • Commonwealth Alumni who studied in the UK
  • They must have at least one year of experience after the scholarship
  • Current mentors can apply again for another year

Note that the mentee side is aimed at Master’s and Doctoral scholars. The CSC has a separate FAQ page for detailed eligibility criteria so read it before you apply.

What Mentees Get

A mentee gets more than general advice. The programme is set up to give:

  • Personal guidance from an alumnus in a field close to your own
  • Help on how to turn your studies into real-world impact back home
  • Practical tips for life and study in the UK
  • Advice on career development and employability skills
  • A stronger professional network
  • More confidence for future job and leadership opportunities

One past mentee from India said the biggest value was learning how to apply their studies to real development problems. They also said the career advice shaped their plans. The UK living tips were useful too but mostly matched what they already expected. That is a helpful reality check. The strongest part of this programme seems to be the career and impact guidance not the settling-in advice.

What Mentors Get

Mentoring is unpaid volunteer work so why do alumni sign up? The programme lists several benefits:

  • Building mentoring and leadership skills
  • Improving communication and knowledge-sharing abilities
  • Growing your professional network inside the CSC community
  • Learning from a new scholar’s fresh ideas

A past mentor from Pakistan said the structure made it easier to build a real relationship and that they learned from their mentee as much as they taught. For experienced professionals that two-way learning is often the hidden reward.

How the Matching Works

You do not choose your partner directly. The CSC matches people based on your application answers. The main factors include:

  • Country preference
  • Subject or field of study
  • Topic area and keywords
  • Your reasons for joining
  • The mentor’s professional experience

Once matched each pair follows five stages. These stages guide you through key milestones during the year. The programme also gives you:

  • Handbooks
  • Regular updates
  • Skills development resources
  • Online information sessions at the start
  • Virtual meet-ups with other mentors and mentees

An Honest Note for Mentors

There are more eligible alumni than new scholars. That means the programme usually gets more mentor applications than mentee applications. So not every mentor can be paired.

If that happens to you then do not take it personally. The CSC says it cannot give feedback on individual applications. But it encourages unsuccessful applicants to try again in future or ask about other volunteering opportunities by emailing the CSC Alumni Team.

This is worth knowing before you apply. If you are a mentee your chances of a match are generally better. If you are an alumnus, a clear and specific application may help you stand out during matching.

Key Dates

  • Programme runs: December 2026 to December 2027
  • Full information sent to eligible people: September 2026
  • Application deadline: 23:59 BST Sunday 11 October 2026
  • Contact: alumni@cscuk.org.uk

Watch your email in September. The CSC says eligible scholars and alumni will get the full details and application instructions directly. Also note the deadline uses British Summer Time so check your local time zone.

One small warning. The official page mixes in some older dates from earlier years such as 2024 and 2025. If you see a date that does not match 2026-27 trust the current call and confirm with the CSC Alumni Team.

Why This Programme Matters

A scholarship programme works best when scholars can turn their year in the UK into lasting change. Mentoring helps with that. It links people at the start of their journey with people who have already tried to bring their learning home with all the real obstacles that involves.

For scholars, it can save months of guesswork. For alumni, it keeps them connected to a community that shaped their careers. And for home countries, it strengthens the chain that turns a Commonwealth Scholarship into real progress.
