Most fellowships work the same way. Find the program, fill out the form, submit your documents and wait for a decision. The Internet Society Fellowship Program does not work that way.
Before you can even access the application, you have to complete a mandatory Pre-Fellowship Training. Finish it and the application link will arrive in your inbox within 24 hours. Skip it and there is no application to submit regardless of how strong your profile is.
That is not a minor procedural detail. For the 2027 cohort, the training must be completed by 22 November 2026. The fellowship application closes on 18 December 2026. Miss the first date and the second one becomes irrelevant.
The Internet Society Fellowship program is open now. Which means the clock is already running.

What the Fellowship Offers
Ten months. A mentor matched to your project. Up to $5000 in project funding. Fully covered travel to a major international Internet event. Access to a global alumni network built over years of Internet governance work.
That is the core package. But the structure matters as much as the benefits.
This is not a training course with a certificate at the end. Fellows design and implement a real community project during the program, something that addresses an actual Internet challenge in their region. The stipend funds that work. The mentorship shapes it. The international events provide context and connections that outlast the fellowship year itself.
Full benefits include:
- A dedicated mentor aligned with your track and project
- Project stipend of up to US$5000
- Fully funded travel to a regional or global Internet event
- Structured leadership and technical training across 10 months
- Engagement with international Internet experts and practitioners
- Access to the Internet Society’s global alumni network
- Professional networking with fellows from across the world
One clarification worth making explicit. Completing the Pre-Fellowship Training confirms eligibility. It does not guarantee selection. The fellowship application is a separate competitive process after training is done.
Three Tracks: Pick the One That Fits Your Work
Fellows choose a track based on their expertise and the project they want to build. Each track has sub-tracks for more specific focus areas.
1. Internet Policy and Mobilization
For advocates and community organizers working on digital governance and Internet rights.
Sub-tracks: Internet Policy / Community Mobilization
2. Internet Connectivity
For technical professionals working to expand or improve Internet infrastructure and access in underserved communities.
Sub-tracks: Peering / Community-Centered Connectivity
3. Internet Safety and Security
For cybersecurity researchers and practitioners focused on building safer, more trustworthy online environments.
Sub-tracks: Systems Security / Online Trust and Safety
Choosing the right track is not just a formality. The mentors assigned the events fellows attend and the peer cohort they work alongside are all shaped by this choice. Pick the track that reflects what you actually do not the one that sounds most impressive.

Who This Program Is Built For
The Internet Society Fellowship targets experienced professionals and emerging leaders who are already working on Internet-related challenges in their communities.
The program uses the phrase Internet changemakers deliberately. This is not an entry-level training opportunity for people exploring a career pivot. It is designed for people who have already identified a problem, have the background to address it and need the resources, mentorship and global platform to execute it at a higher level.
Strong applicants typically bring:
- A track record in Internet policy, connectivity, cybersecurity or community digital work
- A clear project idea addressing a specific local Internet challenge
- Previous leadership, technical or community engagement experience
- The ability to articulate long-term impact beyond the fellowship year
Geography is not a barrier. The program is open to applicants worldwide and actively seeks fellows from underrepresented regions.
