Some universities in Europe are very old. The University of Perugia in Italy is one of them. It was founded in 1308. Now it is offering 31 funded PhD positions for the XLII cycle. These seats are open to students from every country.
This sounds great. But the details matter. This guide explains what the Perugia PhD Scholarships really gives you and what it does not. It also shows what to check before you pay any fees or start your application.

What This Opportunity Is
The University of Perugia PhD Scholarships cover doctoral study in Italy. The university is public. The seats span many fields:
- Science
- Engineering
- Medicine
- Economics
- Law
- Humanities
Every seat in this call is funded. There are no unfunded places. This is important to know. If you say no to the scholarship, you also say no to the PhD position.
What the Scholarship Gives You
The call states a yearly scholarship amount of €22416.96. This money comes from a regional program called PR Umbria FSE+ 2021 to 2027.
This is a full-time research job. You are expected to work on your research every day. It is not a part-time study plan.
You will also pay some small costs:
- €156 in your first year. This includes stamp duty and a regional tax.
- €140 in later years.
The application fee is separate. Some sources list a €20 contribution. Always check the official call before you pay anything.
Be Careful With the Words Fully Funded
Many websites call this scholarship fully funded. That is not the best way to describe it. The scholarship pays you a yearly amount. But it does not promise to pay for your flight. It does not promise to pay for your housing. It also does not cover your first moving costs.
So you must plan your own budget. Include these things:
- Travel to Perugia
- Housing
- Food
- The first costs when you arrive
Also ask the Doctoral Office these questions:
- How are scholarship payments calculated
- When does the first payment arrive
- What costs must you pay before that first payment
The first payment may not come on day one. So you may need some savings to start.
Which Fields Are Available
The official list is grouped into six areas. Here are the main areas and one question to ask yourself for each:
Physics, chemistry and earth sciences. Which study direction matches the methods in your thesis. Civil, industrial and information engineering. Can you show the technical training the role needs. Biology, medicine, agriculture and veterinary sciences. Is your past research relevant and does the program accept your degree. Economics and statistics.
How will your analysis skills help the proposed research. Law, politics and social sciences. Which legal, policy or social issue connects this PhD to your earlier work. History, literature, education and philosophy. Can you explain your research question, your sources and your method clearly.
Your first job is to find the program that fits your background. A good fit matters more than a famous title. Each program sheet tells you which degrees it accepts and how it judges applicants.
Who Can Apply
You can apply if you meet these points:
- You hold a master level degree that fits the program
- Your degree matches the approved qualifications and research area of your chosen program
- Your foreign degree is equal to an Italian second cycle degree or EQF Level 7
- It must also allow you to enter a PhD in the country that gave you the degree
All nationalities are welcome. The university committee decides if your foreign degree is equal. This is why you must prepare proof. You may need papers that explain the level of your degree and that it allows PhD study in your home country.
Your qualifying degree must generally be obtained by 31 October 2026. Confirm the exact cutoff in the call.
Documents You Will Need
Typical documents include:
- Completed application form
- Academic transcript
- Degree certificate
- Research proposal
- Personal statement
- Thesis summaries
- CV or resume
- Valid passport
- Other supporting documents
Each program may ask for different papers. So use the program sheet as your main guide. Do not use only this list.
Application Deadline
Last date to apply is 28 October 2026 at 23:59.
Do not wait until the final day. The system needs time. Your papers may need extra checks too.

Smart Advice Before You Pay
Applicants from outside Europe should read the eligibility rules fully before paying any fee. A saved draft does not promise a seat or any funding. Only a full and correct submission counts.
Also remember this. Selection decides both your admission and your funding. Both depend on how the committee scores your file.
