WAAW Foundation Scholarship 500 Dollar Award for African Women in STEM

Many young African women want to study science, technology, engineering or maths. Money and support often stand in the way. The WAAW Foundation Scholarship helps female undergraduate students in Africa who study a STEM course. It gives a one time award of 500 US dollars and a place in a community of women in STEM. In return scholars take part in STEM outreach and inspire younger girls.

Announcements say the 2026/2027 applications open on 30 October 2026. But the foundation’s own scholarship page currently says applications are closed and to check back in November 2026. The deadline has not been announced. Prepare now and watch the official page.

STEM Outreach Duties and Payment

The foundation expects scholars to take part in STEM outreach. You must be an active member of a WAAW STEM Chapter at your university. If there is no chapter you are expected to start one with help from the foundation.

The published guidance describes two payments:

  • First payment after you finish at least three STEM outreach activities
  • Second payment after you finish six outreach activities and meet the chapter and reporting rules

Outreach can include sessions for schoolgirls, mentoring science clubs, workshops and other approved programmes that promote STEM. You must report each activity the way the foundation asks. Check the exact amounts and dates for the 2026/2027 group when they are published.

How To Write a Strong Personal Statement

  • Show your real interest in STEM. Name the problem or experience that pulled you in
  • Be honest about money. Say what the award would change in your studies. Do not exaggerate
  • Show your academic drive. Mention project results and how you handled hard times
  • Give real community examples. Say what you did who it helped and what you learned
  • Link your goals to women in STEM. A small clear plan is better than a huge dream
  • Sound like yourself. Do not copy a generic essay

You do not need a big title to show leadership. Mentoring a younger student or running a science club can count.

Mistakes To Avoid

  • Thinking the scholarship pays all your fees. It is a 500 dollar award
  • Applying when you are in medicine or nursing
  • Applying as a final year student or a postgraduate student
  • Forgetting the age limit of below 32
  • Waiting to ask your referees until the form is open
  • Writing about hardship without saying what the money would change
  • Using unofficial forms. Apply only on the official page
  • Not planning for the outreach duties and reports
